There is a reason for this, I have regular dealings with romani and Irish travellers. They take their kids out of secondary education to keep them "pure". They don't really hold our notion of society and it's rules in high regard either. Despite this I wouldn't really call them disadvantaged, the guys that don't end up serving time for whatever shenanigans they get up to tend to be successful entrepreneurs in the black economy. Grass is greener etc. Same situation in most of Europe regards to male teachers, the percentage of male teachers seems to reliably drop year by year and I don't blame them.

Its rational to him for whatever reason, are you not at all curious about how he arrived at that conclusion? Plenty of fatherless kids around like him trying to fill in all the blanks on what it means to be a man, to him its a life free of risk. I have to wonder how much the lack of a mentor/father figure contributed towards most of these problems young men are facing.
