They can keep trying to collect, but if you don't have income to garnish or assets to attach, they can't collect. Usually they try to garnish wages by contacting your employer and making them to turn over a portion of your wages. That's the easiest and cheapest collection method. But if you're self employed you have customers, not employers. I live with roommates at a place i found on Craigslist. If you don't rent from a bureaucratic rental agency there are still private landlords willing to go with their gut instinct. I showed him my company bank statements which demonstrated a stable income stream. I showed him my website. They didn't check my credit. When it comes time to buy, my company will probably get into real estate investments and rent to me. They're nice enough to be giving me a company car right now.

I defaulted on my student loans and built my own business, which i never could have done if i worried about making payments. They can't garnish wages if you don't earn a wage. Can't seize a stake in someone's company if they have multiple shareholders. Corporations are legal persons, and another person can't be responsible for the debt of another without having cosigned on it.
