Appendectomy is an emergency procedure, gender reassignment is elective. Nice try.

You are right, when you entertain someone's delusions or encourage damaging thinking patterns, the person is more than likely going to suffer from it. I misspoke about the pioneer - I was referring to John Hopkins University, where the first reassignment surgery in the USA took place. They are no longer performing that procedure. There is a study done in 2011 on gender reassignment patients that points to statistically higher suicide/suicide attempt rates after they go through with the surgery, …

One might argue that gender reassignment is not treatment, but more akin to giving an alcoholic another drink, or telling a friend the voices in their head are real. It says a lot that the pioneer of gender reassignment surgery no longer performs the procedure. I'm not a doctor so I don't have any helpful solutions, but I do not think the current way that society treats these people is the right solution. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for them.

I actually believe I should have been born without the use of my legs. I am going to get surgery to have my legs removed because I believe this. I'm not sick, I just think differently than most of you. Encourage my behavior or you're just another ableist.

Fantastic post, I've been thinking this for a while and it's something I pass on to friends who are going through rough times - LIFE is all a matter of perspective. If something seems bleak and hopeless, it's time to look at it from a new angle.

Unsubscribe from the defaults, find subs that actually interest you, then reddit becomes more tolerable :)
