It isn't only population density. It is also the concept of availability of resources. If food, water and shelter are readily and easily attainable. The other factor is easy access to many male mates and attention(online communication) for the females.

Humans are wired for density. But I'm sure there are parallels with the mouse study and human society. Keep in mind, resources are a big factor, also perceived density may be a factor. Social media probably exacerbates both the reality and the illusion of density. Also, we've doubled our population from many billion to many more billion in mere decades... this is absolutely UNPRECEDENTED. We're in uncharted territory, as a species and a planet.
