Crosspost "Nerd culture and adults who refuse to grow up" from /r/FemaleDatingStrategy:

I'm posting this rant here as I know the rest of reddit would react badly if I posted it in another sub. I've started to notice that more and more men are beginning to define themselves by the media/games they consume. To me, this is extremely unhealthy, and representative of a kind of childish/teenage mindset. I notice this most with men who identify as nerds/gamers.

Liking media that people may consider geeky is fine (I have a soft spot for sci-fi myself). Defining yourself by it is another. It's like they lack the self-confidence to express themselves as people, so cling onto media to form an identity. It reminds me of my early 2000s "edgy" phase, when I used what music I listen to judge others and isolate myself-but my excuse was that I was 15 and grew out of it (still like the rock music though.)

Anyway, I wrote this after seeing one too many dating profiles listing Lord of The Rings, video games, and Star Wars as their hobbies. As if that's unique.
