So I’m a sophomore in college and started working as a server for 6 months. Left for a week to Cali. When I got back I had a few coworkers tell me my boss was talking shit about me with another manager. Stuff like, “he doesn’t do anything” “he’s extremely disrespectful” etc.

Now here’s the interesting thing, when I got back nothing changed. My hours were the same and everything was back to normal. A couple days later, my boss comes to me and says, “I’m not sure about what you’re hearing but I’ve never said anything negative about you”. Interesting, I said, “Not sure what you’re talking about”. She then had this face of guilt, almost like she thought “I just outed myself”. The conversation changes and I’m on my way.

I’m just trying to better understand social dynamics as I get older, especially when I enter the corporate field.

  1. Why did she make that statement?
  2. What form of talk was this in terms of “PowerTalk, straight-talk, game-talk, baby-talk”?
